Founded in 1922, the Department of Chemistry at the Xiamen University is one of the nation's top Chemistry Departments. It has provided national leadership in chemical education and research. Physical Chemistry (including catalytic chemistry, electrochemistry, theoretical chemistry and structural chemistry) and Analytical Chemistry have been two areas of strength at the Xiamen University. Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry have also been rapidly developed in recent years.
The Department of Chemistry strives for an ideal balance between knowledge creation and knowledge dissemination in the chemical sciences, with a focus on student training and education. The Department offers undergraduate majors in chemistry leading to Bachelor of Science degrees. The Department enrolls about 120 students each year. A BS program in chemical education which enrolls 50 students each year, has been launched since 2001, partially in response to request from the local provincial and municipal governments. The chemistry major is designed to prepare students for graduate studies, for careers in industries and businesses that depend on chemically based technologies. A special undergraduate program for honorary students has been established in 1991. The top 50 undergraduate students form a special class each year to receive more advanced education and more intensive training. Almost 70% of the students from the honorary program continue their graduate studies each year.
